Cyprus Geohazard Observatory Supersite (CyGOS) Approved as a Permanent GEO–GSNL Supersite

The Cyprus Geohazard Observatory Supersite (CyGOS) has been officially approved as a Permanent Geohazard Supersite under the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) – Geohazard Supersites and Natural Laboratories (GSNL) initiative, with support from the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS).

Coordinated by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), CyGOS positions Cyprus among a limited number of Supersites worldwide, providing privileged access to high-resolution satellite data, including Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and other Earth Observation (EO) datasets from major international space agencies.

The Supersite is implemented through a strong collaboration between key national and international partners, including:

  • Cyprus Geological Survey Department
  • German Aerospace Center (DLR)
  • National Observatory of Athens (NOA)
  • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH)

This important achievement builds directly upon the CyCLOPS strategic research infrastructure, reflecting the long-term investment in advanced space-based geodetic monitoring technologies. In particular, it highlights the integration of permanent GNSS stations and InSAR corner reflector networks, which form the backbone of the national ground deformation monitoring capability.

The establishment of CyGOS represents a significant milestone for Cyprus, strengthening its role as an active and reliable contributor within the global Space and Earth Observation community, while enhancing national capacity for geohazard monitoring, risk assessment, and resilience.
