Education: Dr. Kyriaki A. Fotiou is a Researcher at the Cyprus University of Technology and a member of the CUT Laboratory of Geodesy at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics.
She holds a BSc in Surveying Engineering and Geomatics and an MSc, with distinction, in Geoinformation and Geospatial Technologies from the Cyprus University of Technology. She has also obtained a PhD in Remote Sensing from the Cyprus University of Technology, specialising in the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Interferometric SAR (InSAR) techniques for monitoring active landslides.
Her doctoral research focused on the development of an integrated SAR-based approach for monitoring active and dynamically evolving landslides, with particular emphasis on the processing, calibration, validation, and interpretation of satellite radar observations.
Professional Background: Dr. Fotiou has extensive experience in geospatial data processing, satellite remote sensing, SAR interferometry, and Geographic Information Systems. She contributes to national and European research projects related to Earth observation, natural hazards, ground deformation monitoring, and the development of geospatial services and research infrastructures.
Her work includes the processing and analysis of multi-temporal SAR datasets, the generation, calibration, and validation of InSAR ground-motion products, and the development of methodologies for landslide and geohazard monitoring. She is actively involved in the operation and scientific exploitation of the Cyprus Continuously Operating Natural Hazards Monitoring and Prevention System (CyCLOPS), the development of the Cyprus Ground Motion Service, and research activities undertaken within the EXCELSIOR and AI-OBSERVER projects, with a focus on Earth observation, natural hazards, ground deformation, and resilient societies.
Previously, she worked as a Research Associate in the Planning Department of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, where she was responsible for the collection, processing, management, and updating of geospatial data within an ArcGIS environment. She also worked as a trainee surveyor at the Department of Lands and Surveys of Cyprus, contributing to the updating of cadastral plans and the investigation and resolution of cadastral cases and discrepancies. Earlier in her career, she completed a traineeship as a GIS Analyst at Marathon Data Systems in Greece, gaining experience in the use of the ArcGIS platform.
Dr. Fotiou is a registered member of the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK) and serves as Secretary of the Cyprus Association of Rural and Surveying Engineers (CARSE).
Research: Her research mainly focused on Remote Sensing (SAR Satellite image processing), SAR Interferometry and GIS Applications.
