CyCLOPS, which is in full operational capacity since June 2021, is launching the “CyCLOPS contribution to a Resilient and Sustainable Society” open-call competition with the aim of fostering the use of CyCLOPS Strategic Research Infrastructure Unit among young professionals, entrepreneurs, SMEs, and scientific community, to create innovative ideas and solutions across Cyprus and Europe.
The deadline for submission of ideas is 01.02.2023 23:59. Interested? Click here!
The Cyprus Continuously Operating Natural Hazards Monitoring and Prevention System (RPF/INFRASTRUCTURES/1216/0050), abbreviated CyCLOPS, is co-financed by the European Union Regional Fund and the Republic of Cyprus through the Research Promotion Foundation. The main objective of the project was the establishment of a novel Strategic Research Infrastructure Unit for monitoring Solid Earth processes and Geohazards in Cyprus and the broader EMENA region. CyCLOPS has deployed permanent co-located multi-sensor configurations (Tier-1/2 GPS/GNSS reference stations, SAR Corner Reflectors, weather stations, tiltmeters et. al.) throughout Cyprus to promote geohazard monitoring, critical infrastructure resilience and enhance National Geodetic and Spatial Data Infrastructure.
CyCLOPS targets applications, which integrate the use of the most prominent Earth Observation technologies, such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for country-wide estimation of ground displacement with high accuracy and resolution. Solutions animated through mobile phone applications or other easy-to-use platforms are also welcome.
CyCLOPS is looking for solutions in which the main innovation is based on the use of CyCLOPS Infrastructure Unit, i.e. real-time and post-processing services provided by the CyCLOPS sensors.
CyCLOPS Open-Call Competition is an ideas competition. Solutions should be presented and demonstrated in a written technical form. Applicants do not need to technically develop an application, although the technical feasibility of the idea or scientific finding should be demonstrable.
The competition will be organized in two stages. The first phase is an open call for ideas, during which applicants should submit a technical report describing their idea. The deadline for submissions in this phase is 01.02.2023. These proposals will be evaluated by an evaluation committee, formed by Cyprus University of Technology and other reputable academics and senior researchers from the EU area, and a maximum of five (5) projects will be chosen as finalists. The selected applicants will refine their reports and prepare their final reports, for which technical support will be made available.
The official award of the CyCLOPS Open-Call competition will take place virtually, during the next few months. During this event, each finalist will present their solution to the evaluation committee. The winners will be announced on the official website of CyCLOPS (www.cyclops.cy).
With this competition, CyCLOPS aims to expand the knowledge in studying geohazards by increasing the use of the Earth Observation Technologies in the field of geomatics and to increase awareness of the benefits these Funded Programmes provide toward fostering innovative geomatics applications.
